The Beginning

It was 1993.  The year my life took a dramatic turn and had me headed directly for good old Butner, North Carolina. It was a long trip filled with many hills and valleys, regrets and mistakes. Leading among my mistakes was leaving my first wife. It took losing her to realize how great she was to me, and what a wonderful mother to our two daughters she was.  I took her for granted and didn’t understand how much until long after I wound up meeting a young woman one night while playing cards.  I was thirty-nine, and she was a twenty-six year old model. I didn’t know that meeting this young woman would set off the series of events that would eventually land me a new friend, who just happened to be the man accused of running the largest Ponzi scheme the world had ever known!

Indeed there must have been something in the air during 1993. Because while I was throwing my life into a tailspin in Westchester, New York, just a few miles south was Bernard Madoff in Manhattan. He was the non-executive chairman of the NASDAQ stock market and was making one of the worst deals in Wall Street history! This deal being struck would create the need for a Ponzi scheme, the sheer size of which would rattle Wall Street to its very core and land him face to face with the man accused of distributing enough Hydrocodone to medicate New York for half a year, me!

What can I do?
